Cutts Warns Webmasters of Impending Penguin Update

Speaking at the SES San Francisco conference on Wednesday, head of Google’s spam fighting team Matt Cutts spoke about the impending Penguin update and warned of more significant “jolts” to come.

Cutts explained that Google is continuing to update Penguin and that as it is a more recent addition than Panda, webmasters are likely to notice larger adjustments until it settles down. Penguin update rumours have left webmasters wondering how much they will be affected by search engine ranking updates. Subtle changes to the Google algorithm have previously caused little disruption. However, webmasters are unsure of the form Penguin will take and when it will occur.

It is often difficult to know whether their sites will be penalised or benefit from future changes if they have been previously unaffected. Penguin algorithmic adjustments are designed to prevent spammy websites from succeeding in the rankings. Sites built with poor quality links are targeted in order to reward authoritative sites that deserve to be higher in the rankings.
